Victory! $2 million in stolen wages earned for over 50 day laborers in Seattle

A BIG win for workers in Seattle this week who won $2 million of stolen wages for over 50 day laborers here in Seattle!

Casa Latina’s Workers Defense Team helped file a complaint with the Office of Labor standards against two different employers who failed to pay sick time and minimum wage. During the investigation, the team continued to offer support with translation and gathering testimonies.

The Office of Labor standards decided in favor of the workers, awarding $2 million in stolen wages.  The employers may appeal, and if they do the workers will have the Worker Defense Team lending support.

Fear of speaking up due to possible retaliation has allowed employers to create a culture of abuse, especially within industries with large numbers of immigrant and BIOPOC workers.  This recent decision by the Office of Labor Standards, in favor of workers, illustrates what can happen when city officials, workers, and community organizations work together to find solutions and demand accountability when individuals make their voices heard.
