Education and hard work are building blocks for safe, stable and prosperous communities.
Casa Latina is dedicated to providing immigrants with educational opportunities critical to their integration as well the labor skills that help to support them and their families.
Every year, about 350 immigrants enroll in our programs. In addition to our well-known work with day laborers, we offer a range of programs for immigrant women and families with children. We focus on three areas:
- Education — We teach English language classes for immigrant workers as well as offer workshops on job safety, worker rights and consumer education.
- Employment — We introduce immigrant workers to employers and help workers develop their own small businesses or long-term employment relationships.
- Leadership — We develop stronger voices for Latino immigrant workers and families through civic engagement, immigration reform advocacy, women’s support groups, and day laborer organizing.
In 2011 Casa Latina:
- Dispatched 4,867 temporary day labor and domestic jobs, with an average wage of $14.44 per hour.
- Placed 64 immigrants in permanent work.
- Provided ESL classes to 196 immigrant day laborers to help them improve their skills and better advocate for themselves.
- Provided workplace safety and skills trainings to 344 workers on subjects including workplace safety, ergonomics, green cleaning, and green gardening.
- Recovered $22,317 in wages for workers who were not paid by their employers.
