May 16, 2013. Seattle. Thanks to the generosity of 135 donors, with gifts ranging from $10 to $3,000, we have reached our $15,000 challenge match goal to support the ESL program!  About half of these donations were made as part of GiveBIG and will qualify for an additional “stretch” match. 

Successful completion of this challenge match ensures that Casa Latina’s ESL program will remain fully funded through the end of this year, helping hundreds of immigrants learn English, find and keep work, support their families, and contribute to the community!

Meet Carlos, a 26-year old man from Guatemala, who is learning English, so that someday his aspirations to study accounting can become a reality. And meet Margarita, a woman from El Salvador who only attended school until she was only nine and is now learning to speak, read, and write English. And there is Jose, who works in a restaurant. By learning English, Jose knows he can negotiate for fair working conditions and wages, wages he sends to support his two children in Mexico, so that they can get a good education.

The Senate "Gang of Eight" was scheduled to release an immigration bill today.  But out of respect for the horrific attack at the Boston Marathon, they delayed the release for a day or so.   However, they did distribute a summary of the bill to news outlets and to others.  Here is the inside scoop on the summary:

Each year at La Fiesta del Sol, Casa Latina’s signature gala dinner & auction, we present the Social Visionary Awards.  This year’s winners are Rep. Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney and Jorge Baron.

Rep. Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jorge Baron, Executive Director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP), will receive the Social Visionary Award.

Hearing at the King County Council to further address wage theft

And the fight to end wage theft continues: On Monday April 23rd at 1:30 pm there will be a hearing at the King County Council to further address wage theft.  The hearing will take place in the Council Chambers on the 10th floor of the King County Courthouse, at 516 Third Avenue between James and Jefferson in Seattle.

Seattle launches Caring Across Generations campaign to bring attention to the care crisis

As the nation’s population ages – an American turns 65 every 8 seconds – more families are turning to paid caregivers and taking on caregiving responsibilities themselves.

The local launch of the national Caring Across Generations movement (which kicked off last summer in Washington, D.C.) took place on Saturday. Nearly 200 people gathered at the Greenwood Senior Center for Seattle’s Care Congress to tackle the challenges presented by the growing need for affordable, quality long-term care.
