Highlights from En Camino Gala 2016
“The immigrants I know and love… are the hardest working workers I’ve met in my life. Now is the time to double down on fighting for justice for our community.”
What a grand night! Thank you—guests, community partners, friends, volunteers, and allies—for making a special commitment to the Latino immigrant community at such a crucial time. While some people speak of building walls, YOU built bridges and paved the way to empowering Latino immigrants through employment, education, and community organizing!
With over 500 guests at the En Camino Gala, the night was a wonderful reminder of the love and compassion that thrive at Casa Latina. Seattle City Councilmember Lorena González reminded us that this is an especially important time to fight for justice for immigrants; Casa Latina Executive Director Marcos Martinez gave us an overview of Casa Latina’s unique place in the world and the employment, education, and community organizing that make us special; former Casa Latina member Gilda Blanco recounted her journey from being scared and alone to being a fierce and compassionate advocate for immigrant and domestic worker rights; in a special video presentation, Jessika and Israel showed us how Casa Latina helped them overcome challenges in their lives; and special musical guest Cambalache reminded us that though our work may be hard, joy and merriness is at its heart!
The event program is a special part of the En Camino experience, but more than anything we love our guests. You raised over $238,000! At a time when many immigrant communities are under attack, your contributions will support Latino immigrants as they empower themselves by preparing for new and better jobs, learning to speak English, and advocating for policies that will affect all immigrant workers. Your gifts make ESL classes, day labor job dispatch, workplace safety and skill workshops, and leadership development available for all our members!
